Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

The main reason I chose to do an apprenticeship was to improve my FM and people management skills. Having completed the apprenticeship, I believe it has provided me with a more well-rounded skill set.

What does your job involve?

As a Facilities Assistant, I am responsible for a wide variety of duties including carrying out minor repairs and maintenance, health and safety checks, DSE assessments, risk assessments, coordinating sub-contractors and providing support and advice to my team. No day is ever the same and my days are never dull. I will always go out my way to make my client happy!

What is the best thing about your job?

One of the best things about my job is the people I work with. My team are always there to give me support and guidance.

What do you think of Anabas as an employer?

I think Anabas is a fantastic company to work for. They invest in their staff and understand the importance of individual progression and provide opportunities to help people improve or gain new skills within the industry. I also like the fact that you are not just another number… we’re all known by name.

What would you say was the biggest challenge when you completed your apprenticeship?

As part of my studies, I completed modules in which, I had no prior knowledge or experience. Although this was a steep learning curve, I overcame the obstacles and passed with a Distinction which I was very proud of.

Would you recommend an apprenticeship to others?

I would highly recommend an apprenticeship to anyone; it is a valuable learning opportunity. An apprenticeship will give you hands-on experience in the workplace so you can mix theory with practice. This means that no day will ever be the same and you’re constantly learning and being challenged. It’s a great way of identifying areas you are most interested in.

What would you say are the main benefits of doing an apprenticeship?

The main benefit of doing an apprenticeship is to develop existing skills, gain new skills and increase your knowledge. The skills you learn through completing an apprenticeship will prove to be beneficial either in your present role or alternatively, for future career development.

How would you like your career to develop?

I currently work as a Facilities Assistant, but I would like to work my way up and eventually have the responsibility of managing a team of my own. This would allow me to showcase my skills and knowledge which I’ve gained from my apprenticeship and enable me to continue developing professional relationships and gain confidence.

What advice would you give to prospective apprentices considering going down the apprenticeship route?

If the opportunity arises grab it with both hands. Also, a lot of things during your apprenticeship will be new to you and may be challenging but stay focused and keep going as it’s all going to be worth it in the end!
