Natalia joined Anabas at 16 years old when she finished senior school. She is currently completing her Business Administration Level 2* apprenticeship with The Northern Skills group who recently named her a finalist in the ‘Apprentice of the Year’ category at their 2020 Awards.. Learn about her apprenticeship journey with Anabas as she answers questions on her experience so far…

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

I chose to do an apprenticeship because I think it is 100% more beneficial to me than college would be, and it suits my learning style. I learn more by doing practical work and gaining experience rather than sitting in a classroom and listening to a teacher.

What does your job involve?

I am currently working with the Helpdesk team, providing support to Anabas’ national operation teams. I log jobs, order supplies and respond to emails. I have also translated key health and safety information for our Polish speaking colleagues.I thoroughly enjoy being an apprentice at Anabas and I am thrilled to have been recognised by Northern Skills Group as a finalist for ‘Apprentice of the Year’.

What is the best thing about your job?

No day is ever the same in the FM industry. There is ALWAYS something new to learn. Every day is a learning curve for me, but I am dedicated, and I am getting more confident in my role with the support I get from my colleagues.

What do you think of Anabas as an employer?

I think Anabas is a very good company to work for. They really do care about each individual and their wellbeing. I always receive the support that I need for my apprenticeship and I don’t think a lot of employers would be as understanding! I also love our office dog, Charlie – he creates such a welcoming atmosphere and boosts the morale in the office!

What would you say was the biggest challenge in your apprenticeship so far?
Starting a full-time position straight from school at the age of 16 has been a steep learning curve in general. My colleagues at Anabas have been great at supporting me though. It has taken me a while having to adapt to not having all my school holidays too…

Would you recommend an apprenticeship to others?

I would 100% recommend an apprenticeship to school leavers or anyone that is considering going down that route. Not enough people are aware that there is an option of an apprenticeship in most fields and that it can take you anywhere. When I left school, I was so convinced I wanted to study Law and Sociology and I have taken a completely different turn and I love what I do now and could see a long career in Facilities Management.

What would you say are the main benefits of doing an apprenticeship?

I think the main benefit is that I receive many opportunities to do fun things like projects and different types of training. I am now also so much more open-minded to what career paths I can take after completing my apprenticeship. Having experience in an office workplace is a good advantage to have over others in my age group. I would also say that earning whilst learning when you are young is a great benefit too.

How would you like your career to develop?

I would like to continue working at Anabas and complete a higher apprenticeship.

What advice would you give to prospective apprentices considering going down the apprenticeship route?

Take the time to absorb the learning (even though it’s a lot) and put what you learn into practice in the workplace. Also, take advantage of all the training and support which you will receive. The most important thing is to ask loads of questions!
