Craig is a Facilities Coordinator at Anabas and is currently completing his Facilities Manager Level 4* apprenticeship part-time with Grey Seal Academy. Learn about his apprenticeship journey with Anabas as he answers questions on his experience so far…

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

I believe all opportunities that aid and help drive career development should never be overlooked. When I discovered these apprenticeships were crafted in a way that could be embedded and in tandem with our daily working routine, it was too good to resist.

What does your job involve?

As we all know in the FM industry there aren’t really any boundaries, my role consists of an endless scope of comprehensive property management, operational duties, effective maintenance and service delivery. A one-stop shop for all things FM & Corporate Real Estate.

What is the best thing about your job?

No two days are the same, the FM industry exposes us to a rapidly evolving and dynamic environment. Like the weather, it can be an unpredictable core function for any organisation. However, we strive on prevention and fixing things when they do go wrong!

What do you think of Anabas as an employer?

Since my first day on board with Anabas I have felt well-established and part of a wider encompassing team. Coming from a larger FM company the transition was very unsettling, but the immediate investment Anabas put in its people is very refreshing. I came from an organisation that recognised its talent as a number and not by name. It was a great experience walking in the front door at the Anabas BSC being greeted by the MD on a first name basis.

What would you say was the biggest challenge in your apprenticeship so far?

The biggest challenge for me is being organised and allocating time and focus. It’s very easy to generate a schedule and categorise everything but it’s another thing to stick to it… especially in FM where things always change!

Would you recommend an apprenticeship to others?

Yes! If you’re certain on your desired career path or still on the fence, an apprenticeship will only prepare and gear you up further to make those big steps or decisions.

What would you say are the main benefits of doing an apprenticeship?

For me personally, the apprenticeship lends itself as a refresher and a benchmark of where the industry standard lies. By focusing in on certain elements and reviewing modules relevant to your working environment, it inadvertently triggers innovation and concerns we have within our own organisation. I’ve worked within the FM industry for 14 years, enrolling in this apprenticeship, I haven’t been thoroughly measured academically or assessed on my knowledge. All the inherent knowledge and experience gained throughout my career is now presenting itself and ultimately being documented.

How would you like your career to develop?

I, like most, aspire to gradually work my way through the ranks but very much remain within the FM industry. It’s an industry I’m very fond of and one I believe will remain a key driver for all successful and sustainable businesses.

What advice would you give to prospective apprentices considering going down the apprenticeship route?

Take the opportunity whilst it’s there! Not all employers/businesses are as flexible or prepared to invest in their workforce like Anabas. Learning and improving your skillset isn’t trivial, it’s vital!

* The Facilities Manager Apprenticeship is a 24-month programme that requires the learner to be competent in the delivery of a range of FM services within their responsibility. The learner must demonstrate their knowledge of property asset management, service delivery, compliance, management systems, policy implementation, change management, quality and stakeholder management, people management and financial and procurement management.
